Lombardy Poplar

General description

Columnar tree <20m high. Planted extensively as windbreak. Leaves green on both sides, turning golden in autumn. Catkins Sept.

Tolerates wide range of habitats.

Easily detached stem portions grow in wet ground.

Rapid growth rate, displaces native species.

Site Management

In pasture, livestock will control spread by eating young shoots.

Recommended approaches

1. Spray small plants at full leaf stage (100ml glyphosate/10L).
For larger plants
2. Frill (feather cut bark), paint (250ml glyphosate/1L).
3. Cut & stump paint (5g metsulfuron/1L).
4. Drill & inject 2ml of 20g metsulfuron/1L solution into cuts/holes at 10cm intervals around trunks.
